Sundance Film Festival

In 1985, Robert Redford created a festival that would celebrate the works of indie movie makers, and give them a few tips from the professionals. “That first year, the festival showed a couple of dozen films. This year, Sundance is playing 119 feature films from 32 countries, culled from about 4,000 that were submitted.” (cbsnews.com) Starting off this year, as with every year, in Park city, Utah, the festival turns the tiny little ski town into a central movie hub for the entire country, and even some parts of the world. The festival has led to various film super-stars such as; Steven Soderbergh, Kevin Smith and Quentin Tarantino just to name a few.

Until recently, Sundance has always started off with a major film to set the tone of the festival and get things rolling. Three years ago, founder Robert Redford and festival director John Cooper decided to get rid of that idea and go with a multiple showing of films at different venues. This allowed for a sense of true competition within the festival and  not a star-studded premier showing to steal the show right away. It also allowed them to really show the diversity of what everyone was bringing to the table each year, which is mainly what the festival is about.

Not only are the likes of indie filmmakers there and unknown actors and actresses waiting to show off their talent to the world. But a few stars have managed to make it this year into the festivals line-up of films. These include; Ashton Kutcher playing Steve Jobs, Shia Lebouf in a romance, Daniel Radcliffe, and Ethan Hawke. All of these very popular actors and very successful at what they do. What I think is cool is that they are supporting the indie film community by being a part of it.

The Sundance Film Festival is a great time, and fun way to experience the beauty of film making as an art form, and not just a form of entertainment. It is also a great way for future successful actors, actresses, directors, producers, e.t.c all to get noticed and possibly make it big in the film business and do what they love to do on a major scale. As a person who has personally experienced this wonderful showing of art, I highly recommend anyone who loves the art of film making and some of the raw talent behind it all to experience this once a year festival for themselves.

Consumer Electronics (CES) Show 2013

Another year brings us another Consumer Electronics Show (CES for short). This convention is made to show consumers the best and latest in today’s technology. A lot of cool things are shown each year at CES, and this year was no exception. Such things included a gaming PC designed for the living room called “Steam-Box” and made by big time game developer, and creator of the online gaming web service “Steam”, Valve. There was also a sensor that can be placed on your monitor that tracks you eye-movements so that you can control your computer cursor with just your eyes! Samsung even got Bill Clinton to speak about technology and it’s advantages to our life.

These are just a few of the amazing things to come out of CES every year. This is an absolutely perfect way to show off your stuff, and make yourself know. Much to everyone’s surprise gaming was no longer a side show at CES with Valve’s Steam-Box Premier. It’s a step in the right direction, I think, for the gaming community. Being able to bring the quality of a PC gaming experience with the comfort of console gaming in the living room was something to behold. This is a great demonstration of just how much the way we experience games is changing, and it’s for the better. Many other gaming companies like Razer and Nvidia are going the Mobile route and making high-quality gaming on the go with their devices. A big step forward for gaming and the gaming community alike.

Did you know that your eyes can now replace your computer mouse? Well, with a company called “Tobii” you can do just that. Tobii has made a sensor that tracks you eye-movements and lets yo9u control you computer cursor around your screen. I think that this is probably one of the coolest things to come out of CES this year! This is yet another step forward forward for technology that is ever changing the way we experience it.

Also something awesome to come out of CES was that electronics company, Samsung, hired Bill Clinton to be a spokesman for their main showing. Clinton talked about the advantages of our growing world of technology. Bringing up examples like “Banking by cell phone in Haiti, social media and the Arab spring and bracing for global warming”. (techradar.com) Clinton was finally met with applause at the end of his closer for Samsung when he talked about his support for the assault weapons ban.

All in all, I think this was a good year for major and growing electronics companies. Showing a lot of innovation and confidence at this year’s convention. This year’s CES, in my opinion, will be one to remember for a few years to come.

DmC: Devil May Cry Review

After reading and viewing dozens of reviews on the upcoming game DmC: Devil May Cry. I can say with certainty that I will be purchasing this game to try it for myself. Of the reviews I watched and read, a lot of them seemed to gloss over many of the negative points in the game. It was almost as if the reviewers didn’t want to get down and dirty and really evaluate and look at this game analytically. Instead it appeared as if they just sat there worshiping the ground it walks on. This felt like something was missing from a lot of the reviews. I thought to myself that this game can’t actually be this good, especially with a new developer taking the reigns for the first time. Only a select few reviews captured what I was looking for, and really took the evaluation and analytical sense into account. Coincidentally, these also seemed to be the least biased reviews from what I saw, and I saw a lot!

I think that, when it really came down to processing all of the info. I had acquired, a lot of these reviews seems over-confident and over-hyped. Save one that I really enjoyed from a man who knows what he is talking about. Adam Sessler has revolved his life around video-games and technology, getting his start on the channel “G4”, being the host of video-game show “X-Play”, Adam Sessler has developed a very good reputation in the gaming community. That being said, he has a strong influence towards gamers in his reviews, with them being very accurate, informative and very non-biased. This is what I look for in a review, and what I hope others look for as well. The game lacks a certain pop to it that makes the past Devil May Cry games what they are. This ,by no means however, makes it a bad game. On the contrary, it’s a very good game with lovely visuals and smooth combat mechanics from what I’ve played in the demo, and that was just work in progress. Where it really falls short in my opinion would be the writing. It seems kind of static, with not enough room to let the actors shine. But when it’s good, IT’S GOOD. You really have a feeling of connection to the characters that makes you care about them.

All in all, I think DmC: Devil May Cry will be a good first game to hit the shelves this year and start off the new collection. I can’t wait to get my hands on it and further evaluate it.
Hopefully the year’s line-up of games won’t fail to impress.
